Abstract:
Quantum computers are the next-generation of super computers,
featuring exponential speedup over classical computers. In this talk, I
will briefly introduce the concept of quantum computing and current
development around the world and then proceed to our recent work on
quantum error correction.
Quantum states are inherently susceptible to noise and physical
devices that process quantum information are themselves faulty. The idea
of fault-tolerant quantum computation is introduced to accomplish tasks
of quantum computing by quantum error-correcting codes. Performing
active quantum error correction to protect fragile quantum states highly
depends on the correctness of error information--error syndromes. To
obtain reliable error syndromes using imperfect physical circuits, we
propose the idea of quantum data-syndrome (DS) codes that are capable of
correcting both data qubits and syndrome bits errors. We study
fundamental properties of quantum DS codes and provide several CSS-type
code constructions of quantum DS codes. Linear programming techniques
from classical coding theory will be generalized to this quantum scenario.
