Abstract:

Millimeter-wave (mm-wave) frequency bands (30–300 GHz) provide abundant unlicensed spectrum and are promising to deliver multi-gigabit-per-second data rates for the development of the next generation wireless communication systems. It is necessary to have good knowledge of the propagation channel characteristics across all mm-wave frequencies in order to determine suitable carrier frequency bands and to conduct reliable wireless system design.

In this talk, results of extensive propagation measurements at 30 GHz (26.5–40 GHz), D-band (110–170 GHz), and 300 GHz (300–316 GHz) in indoor line-of-sight (LoS) and non-LoS (NLoS) environments will be presented. The performance of four different path loss models will be compared at 30 GHz, D-band, and 300 GHz, including the single-frequency floating-intercept (FI/3GPP) model, the single-frequency close-in (CI) model, the multi-frequency alpha-beta-gamma (ABG) model, and the multi-frequency close-in frequency-dependent (CIF) model. Comparison of propagation properties, such as path loss, power delay profile (PDP), and diffraction across mm-wave frequencies will also be discussed.

Biography:

Chia-Lin Cheng is currently pursuing his PhD in the Electromagnetic Measurements in Communications and Computing (EMC2) Lab at the Georgia Institute of Technology focusing on mm-wave and THz wireless channel measurements and modeling. His research interests span areas across electromagnetics, wireless channel measurements and modeling. Besides his research work, he also worked on wireless devices and board design at Intel and Cognosos, Inc., an IoT startup. Chia-Lin received the B.Sc. degree in electrical engineering from the National Taiwan University in 2013. Chia-Lin is the recipient of the Best Paper Award at the 2013 Engineering Paper Competition of Chinese Institute of Engineers. He is also the recipient of the Best Poster Award at the 2018 IEEE International Conference on RFID.
