Abstract : 

Recently, a new family of polar codes termed interleaved polar (i-polar) codes, was proposed. It has been shown that both i-polar codes and polar codes of the same block length generate the same synthesized channels. Therefore, conventional bit channel selection algorithms designed for polar codes can be employed for i-polar codes. However, since most of the bit channel selection algorithms are optimized under successive cancellation (SC) decoding, i-polar codes, as well as polar codes, are still weak at short to moderate block lengths even under ML decoding. In this paper, we propose a new bit channel selection algorithm for i-polar codes which generates a sequence termed the i-polar sequence (IPS). The IPS can be used to specify the unfrozen bit sets for any code rates. Simulation results show that stand-alone i-polar codes with IPS under SCL decoding outperform the state-of-the-art 5G LDPC codes and 5G polar codes. Also, the performance levels of stand-alone polar codes with IPS are comparable to those of the 5G LDPC codes.

 

Bio :

Mao-Ching Chiu was born in Chiayi, Taiwan, R.O.C., in 1968. He received the B.S. degree in electronic engineering from the National Taiwan University of Science and Technology, Taipei, Taiwan, R.O.C. in 1990, and the M.S. and Ph.D. degrees in electrical engineering from the National Tsing Hua University, Hsinchu, Taiwan, R.O.C., in 1992 and 1996, respectively. From 1998 to 2002, he was with the Department of Electrical Engineering, National Chi Nan University, Nantou, Taiwan, as an Assistant Professor. In 2002, he joined Integrated Programmable Communications, Inc., as a Manager of the Algorithm Department. During this period, he focused on IEEE 802.11a/b/g baseband receiver design, especially on the design of equalization and decoding algorithms. Since August 2003, he has been with the National Chung Cheng University, Chiayi, Taiwan, where he is currently a Professor at the Department of Communications Engineering and the Department of Electrical Engineering. He was the Chair of the Department of Communications Engineering, National Chung Cheng University, from August 2011 to July 2014. His current research interests include digital communications, error-correcting codes, wireless networks.
