Topic:
From Perception to Participation: Rethinking AI for the Real World
Abstract:
Advances in computer vision and artificial intelligence have significantly improved machines’ ability to understand their surroundings. Yet, a fundamental question remains: How can these advances translate into meaningful real-world impact? In this talk, I will share my research journey from scene understanding to autonomous driving and assistive robotics. These experiences led me to explore scenario-based safety validation, shifting my focus from demonstrating algorithmic performance to understanding system reliability under complex real-world conditions. Along this journey, I recognized a significant gap between laboratory research and real-world deployment. Bridging this gap requires more than technological advances. It demands a deeper understanding of human needs, operational workflows, and environmental constraints. This realization has reshaped my research direction toward Team Robotics, where robots are envisioned not as isolated machines performing predefined tasks, but as integral members of human teams. I will introduce our ongoing interdisciplinary efforts at the Center for Intelligent Team Robotics and Human-Robot Collaboration at National Yang Ming Chiao Tung University to develop and validate intelligent robotic systems in real-world environments.
