Abstract:
Go, or igo, is a complex game with simple rules. It was invented in ancient China more than 3000 years ago. Compared to chess, Go games possess more possibility per move and thus a lot more alternatives and a longer game time. The goal of Go is to surround more territory than the opponent; however, many techniques have been constantly used through Go games such as warikom(挖), tesuji(手筋), and joseki(定式(石)), and thus it’s rather hard to master without practice for a long duration.
Starting from the night on December 29th, 2016, a new account in 奕城網 changed its name as Master and won six professional players in a row. Furthermore, in the following thirty-one days, it continuously won 24 games, including extraordinary opponents such as Yao-Ye Chen, Yu-Ting Mi, and Jie Ke. Before the last online hayago, Master displayed a message in the lobby, “我是AlphaGo的黃博士”(I’m Dr. Huang from Alpha GO), and from then on, it was found that Master turned out to be a promoted version of AlphaGo. One of the best Go players in China, Jie Ke, went to the hospital after losing a game with AlphaGo, and a star from Korea, Lee Sedol, turned out losing the game (but with one victory) as well.
In this talk, we will discover the reason for victories of AlphaGo, and look forward to what we can respond in the future
