Abstract:

Financial technology (Fintech), a broad category that refers to the innovative use of technology in the design and delivery of financial services and products, has revolutionized the financial industry or, even more broadly, the service industry. With the popularization of mobile payments and other growing technologies for payment/shopping, a large amount of data is generated every day, and these data are available to companies and banks. However, the challenges lie in the retrieval of business insights and actionable strategies from this enormous amount of data. 

Artificial intelligence (AI) is the intelligence demonstrated by machines, in contrast to the natural intelligence displayed by humans and other animals. The tremendous success of AI and machine learning algorithms in the area of computer vision and natural language processing has demonstrated enormous potential for further applications into other disciplines. One of the most promising areas is the use of machine learning and signal processing algorithms in FinTech applications. Machine learning and signal processing algorithms are perfect technical vehicles for the extraction of business intelligence from the vast amount of customer behavioral data for FinTech applications.

In 2017, I led an interdisciplinary team of four faculty members (from NTU, NTHU, and NTPT), and was awarded a FinTech grant for a total of three years for more than 15 million NTD under the digital economy foresight research program by MOST. My team focuses on the development of deep learning algorithms utilizing real financial data to build practical recommendation systems for our precision marketing platform. In this talk, I will share some of our recent works supported by this funding, including some interesting industry projects with our startup partners such as AsiaYo and Likr. I hope this talk can stimulate the discussion, research, and applications of machine learning and signal processing for FinTech.

 

Short bio: 

Che Lin received the B.S. degree in Electrical Engineering from National Taiwan University, Taipei, Taiwan, in 1999. He received the M.S. degree in Electrical and Computer Engineering in 2003, the M.S. degree in Math in 2008, and the Ph.D. degree in Electrical and Computer Engineering in 2008, all from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, IL. In 2008, he joined the Department of Electrical Engineering at National Tsing Hua University and has been an associate professor since August 2014. In 2019, He joined the Graduate Institute of Communication Engineering at National Taiwan University. Dr. Lin received a two-year Vodafone graduate fellowship in 2006, the E. A. Reid fellowship award in 2008, and holds a U.S. patent, which has been included in the 3GPP LTE standard. In 2012, he received the Excellent Teaching Award for the college of EECS, NTHU. He won the best paper award for 2014 GIW-ISCB-ASIA conference. In 2015, he received the CIEE outstanding young electrical engineer Award. In 2017, he received the Young Scholar Innovation Award from Foundation For The Advancement Of Outstanding Scholarship. He is a senior member of IEEE. His research interests include Deep Learning, Data Science, FinTech, Signal Processing in Wireless Communications, Optimization Theory, and Systems Biology.
