Transforming Business with AI: From OCR to Intelligent Document Understanding

Abstract : 

Azure Form Recognizer (ARF) is a novel cognitive service that users machine learning (ML) technology to identify and extract text, key/value pairs and table data from form documents. The technology builds upon our cutting-edge OCR (optical character recognition) and form parser technologies that not only translates scanned documents into digital texts but also extracts semantic meaning of the documents which enables customers to automate their business processes more efficiently, accurately and cost effectively. For documents with fixed structure, it’s sufficient to create rules or templates which will work for millions of similar documents with no need for AI. On the other hand, documents with varying layouts or without a fixed structure—like invoices, receipts, general forms —require advanced AI technology to automatically determine the location of data even under layout changes. In this talk, I will briefly describe Microsoft’s industry leading OCR technology and then use Receipt Understanding to illustrate how this pre-built service is developed and shipped – starting from data collection, data redaction, data labeling, modeling, to service engineering.

Bio :

Amy Lu is currently a Principle Engineering Manager in Microsoft AI R&D Center, Taiwan. She runs Visual Document Intelligence (VDI) Taipei team under AI Platform. Prior to that, Amy was an engineering manager in IC3 (Intelligent Conversation and Communications Cloud), leading video pipeline team to deliver industry leading real-time video streaming solutions for products of Microsoft Lync, Teams and Skype. She was the major author of a number of industrial specifications, including DXVA, UVC 1.5 H.264 Payload, MLVEC, UC Config and has contributed to the support of H.264, HEVC and AV1 in Microsoft Media Foundation and Windows Hardware Certification Kit. Amy has over 30 US patents issued and granted. She is a recipient of Microsoft Gold Star Award in 2011 and Skyper Award in 2013. Amy received her Ph.D. in Electrical and Computer Engineering from Carnegie Mellon University.
