Topic :

Data-Plane-Programmable Networks and Applications

Abstract :

Recently, the field of in-network computing is emerging. In this new field, people want the networks to be more intelligent while processing packets. Some benefits of this new field include more efficient network bandwidth usages, increased application-layer data transfer throughput, reduced end-to-end latency for network applications, and enabling innovative ways of using networks and applications.
To achieve these goals, the P4 (programming protocol-independent packet processors) technology has been proposed in recent years. In this talk, I will first present the evolution of programmable networks, from the SDN control-plane programmable networks to the P4 data-plane-programmable networks, and then present one P4 application that we developed and published in IEEE/ACM Transactions on Networking, 2020. The goal of this P4 application is to make a meter friendly to a TCP greedy flow, which fails in three tested data-center-grade commodity switches but is successfully achieved by using a P4 switch running our P4 code.

Bio :

Dr. Shie-Yuan Wang is a full professor of the department of computer science at National Yang Ming Chiao Tung University (NYCU), Taiwan. He received his master and Ph.D. degrees in computer science from Harvard University in 1997 and 1999, respectively. His research interests include programmable networks, Internet of things, machine learning, and wireless networks. He received the “Outstanding Information Technology Elite Award” of Taiwan government (中華民國資訊月「傑出資訊人才獎」)in year 2012, which was bestowed by the Vice President of Taiwan government. He authors the NCTUns/EstiNet network simulator and emulator, which now is a famous tool widely used by researchers in the world. In year 2012, the EstiNet tool won the “Outstanding Information Technology Application and Product Award” of Taiwan government (中華民國資訊月「傑出資訊應用及產品獎」), which was bestowed by the Minister of Economic Affairs of Taiwan government. In year 2014, Dr. Wang received the “President Award of Tokyo University of Science”(日本東京理科大學校長獎)from the President Akira Fujishima for his contributions to computer networking researches. Dr. Wang has published many high-quality journal and conference papers in the fields of computer networks. He has served as general chairs and technical program co-chairs and members for many prestigious IEEE conferences. He is an IEEE Senior Member. Currently, he is serving as Associate Editor for ACM Computing Surveys.
