Physical Beam Sharing in mmWave Communications and over-the-air Testing
Abstract:
Physical (analog) beamforming plays important roles to overcome severe path-loss in millimeter wave (mmWave) communications in the 5G and incoming 6G communications systems. From a view point of network deployment, 5G/6G communications demand huge amount of small cells to achieve dense networks. The costs of the small cells directly relate to the operation expense. Using few RF chains to support multiple users can significantly reduce the hardware and computational costs of base stations and small cells, and thus it benefits the corresponding deployment. In this talk, we introduce a new beam sharing system that uses few RF chains to support more users. The pros and cons of this new scheme and its differences to other popular schemes will be discussed. Moreover, to verify the feasibility and the advantages of the new concept of beam sharing in practice, we implemented a hardware platform and performed OTA (over-the-air) experiments. This platform is at 28 GHz mmWave frequency band and consisting of an 8x8 uniform planar array (UPA). The OTA experiments show that the beam sharing scheme indeed works well in practical wireless environments as well as outperforms conventional beamforming schemes.
Bio:
Shang-Ho (Lawrence) Tsai received the Ph.D. degree in electrical engineering from the University of Southern California, CA, USA, in 2005. From 1999 to 2002, he was with the Silicon Integrated Systems Corporation, where he was involved in the VLSI design for DMT-ADSL systems. From 2005 to 2007, he was with MediaTek Inc., where he was involved in the VLSI design for MIMO-OFDM systems and standard specifications for IEEE 802.11n. In 2007, he joined the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering, National Chiao Tung University, where he is currently a Professor. His research interests are in the areas of signal processing for communications, statistical signal processing, and signal processing for VLSI designs. He has published over 80 papers on prestigious journals and peer reviewed conferences. He was a Visiting Fellow with the Department of Electrical Engineering, Princeton University, in 2013. He was a recipient of the Government Scholarship for Overseas Study from the Ministry of Education, Taiwan, during 2002–2005. He received the Micron Teacher Award at 2018. He also served as a technical committee member in the APSIPA (Asia-Pacific Signal and Information Processing Association) from 2013 to 2017
