Abstract:
Galaxies are building blocks of the universe. An important aspect of astrophysics is thus to understand the formation and evolution of galaxies. A recent important discovery is the realization that every massive galaxy seems to host a supermassive black hole at its center, and that these black holes may actually play important roles in the evolution of the host galaxies. After an introduction to galaxies, I will describe how these supermassive black holes are detected, the spectacular phenomena resulted from the feeding of black holes, and how these black holes affect the behavior and fate of their host galaxies. I will conclude with prospects of furthering our understanding of black hole and galaxy formation physics brought by future astronomical projects.
