Abstract :
Statistical communication theory has been constructed on the foundation of probability, statistics, and random processes, back to the middle of last century. Modern digital communication systems and networks blossom on top of statistical communication theory. We shall go through the birth of statistical communication theory, applications to state-of-the-art communication systems and networks, and the second generation of statistical communication theory to facilitate multiple access wireless communications. With remarkable success in mobile communications and Internet, analysis and inference on big data emerges as a key technology frontier for human society. By abstracting statistical communication theory into a new generation of technological foundation, we explore analytical methodology for networked data in the cyber and cyber-physical world, where statistical communication theory meets statistical learning theory.
