ABSTRACT
Radio technology faces the challenge and opportunity to evolve and facilitate reliable connectivity and precise environment perception for humans and machines in the digital transformation of various sectors, including healthcare and transportation. A key trend addressing this need is converging the communications, sensing, positioning, and alignment functions on the unified radio signal or system. This seminar will first trace back a series of experimental endeavors on opportunistic sensing within communication systems and potential applications in security, healthcare, and human-machine interaction. Then, some preliminary findings and ideas of application-driven radio research on drone swarming, activity modeling, indoor positioning, mapping, and physical-layer security will be shown to illustrate the prospective capabilities of advanced radio techniques in the future life. Beyond the introduction of radio sensing research, the strategies of research result exploitation and instruments for research collaboration will be briefly introduced also at the end.
BIOGRAPHY
Bo Tan received his PhD from the Institute for Digital Communications (IDCOM), The University of Edinburgh, UK, in Nov 2013. From 2012 to 2016, he conducted multiple postdoctoral research projects at the University College London and the University of Bristol, UK, contributing to passive radar design and applications in security and healthcare. From 2017 to 2018, he was a lecturer at Coventry University, UK. Since 2019, he has been a tenure track assistant professor at Tampere University, Finland. His research interests include radio sensing and connectivity for intelligent machines. He is the PI and coordinator of the Academy of Finland, Business Finland, and Horizon European projects on signal processing and machine learning techniques for radio sensing and communications in drone swarming, airport surveillance, healthcare, and 6G. He is the vice chair of the IEEE Finland AP/ED/MTT Chapter, associate editor of IEEE Wireless Communications Letters, and reviewer of multiple IEEE/ACM/IET journals and conferences in wireless communications, radar, pervasive computing, and sensing.
